Why We Dry Farm
Our dry-farming journey started as a conversation over dinner after Robert had just come home from an OSU dry-farming event, buzzing with ideas. He said, “I think we should try this on our farm.” I (Korrie) remember looking at him like he was out of his mind — “Plants need water, Robert!”
But he kept talking about deep roots, healthier soil, and incredible flavor. We had the land but we lacked the funds to run water to it so necessity and curiosity won out. Fast forward to today: we are in our second year of successfully growing about an acre and a half without irrigation. What began as what I thought was a “crazy” idea has turned into one of the most rewarding parts of our farm. The crops are full of flavor, the soil is healthier, and we are conserving a precious resource — water. Dry farming has challenged us, taught us patience, and shown us that sometimes the “crazy” ideas are the ones worth trying.
We encourage everyone to look around their property and see if they can try out dry farming. We have created a cheat sheet that will help you get started and have a successful season farming without irrigation! Reach out if you want to chat more!
